Oscar Romero and America's Fight for Civil Rights 8-9

Oscar Romero spoke often about the need for all of us to fight injustice. He believed that God was with those who suffered and stood by and supported those who took a stand for what was right. Romero gave his life for those suffering in El Salvador, but his words about justice ring true in America's own struggle with civil rights.

The 8th graders of the Arrupe Division have learned about Romero and his steadfast faith in religion class and now they are connecting his words to the American Civil Rights Movement in social studies class. By examining these case studies we can all deepen our commitment to fighting injustices thereby drawing us closer to God.

Civil Rights Project Help

The 8th grade students at BC High are all supposed to research and prepare a project based on a Civil Rights topic. While you are required to have 2 sources (database and book), you are not limited to those. Here are some helpful sites/resources for the 8th grade social studies project. Your goal is to have a professional, interactive, and informational exhibit for our museum, so use these to supplement the required materials to achieve this goal.

The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow: Oral History

Mrs. Wilson's social studies students should listen to each account and answer the questions on the handout from class. Click on the link for the audio segment on each page. Then choose which informant's account struck you the most in terms of the erosion of justice, and leave a blog post expressing your ideas. Feel free to listen to other narratives as magis.
