Oscar Romero and America's Fight for Civil Rights 8-4
Oscar Romero spoke often about the need for all of us to fight injustice. He believed that God was with those who suffered and stood by and supported those who took a stand for what was right. Romero gave his life for those suffering in El Salvador, but his words about justice ring true in America's own struggle with civil rights.
The 8th graders of the Arrupe Division have learned about Romero and his steadfast faith in religion class and now they are connecting his words to the American Civil Rights Movement in social studies class. By examining these case studies we can all deepen our commitment to fighting injustices thereby drawing us closer to God.

ReplyDelete"Brothers, you come from our own people. You are killing your own brothers. Any human order to kill must be subordinate to the law of God, which says,"Thou shalt not kill". No soldier is obliged to obey an ordercontrary to the law of God. No one has to obey an immortal law. It is high time you obeyed your consciences rather than sinful orders."
This quote by Oscar Romero relates to the black panther group because they fought for justice just as Romero. During their existence the Klu Klux Klan was a white supremacy group who was unjust and in the words of Romero "Did not obey the law of God". The black panthers were fighting for their rights and the rights of their people. They were trying to erase the legacy of white supremacy in the United States. This relates also to what we studying because just as the Salvadorans were blacks were segregated in the states. Just as the Salvadorans the blacks were targeted by the supierior group in their time. The black panthers were showing whites that we are brothers. That you are killing your own brothers. And you are disobeying the law of your own God.

ReplyDelete"If we are worth anything, it is not because we have more money or more talent, or more human qualities. Insofar as we are worth anything, it is because we are grafted on to Christ's life, his cross and resurrection. That is a person's measure."
I think that this quote really relates to the time of the Montgomery Busing Boycott because white people at the time were just like blacks but they did not realize it. I think that Father Romero brings up a very good point and saying that we (white people) have no different qualities then those of a black. Blacks back then where degraded because they were seen as different people to the whites so they were segregated from the community. Especially the buses in Montgomery, they were forced to sit in the back of the buses and give up their seat if a white person could not find his or her seat. The black people of the time were no different than the whites, they were people just like anyone else, the whites just did not realize it. It is injust to treat someone else different when we are all people of God and love and care for each other. We should not judge people by their skin color; there personality is what really matters.
“We suffer with those who have disappeared, those who have had to flee their homes, and those who have been tortured.”
ReplyDeleteI found that my topic, The Mississippi Summer Project, relates to this quote said by Oscar Romero. In this quote it says, “Those who have disappeared.” During the Mississippi Summer Project, three civil rights workers, who were part of the Mississippi Democratic Party, disappeared that summer. Later they were found dead. Also, in this quote, it says, “Those who have been tortured.” These blacks weren’t being physically tortured, but in a way, everyday they were being tortured. The blacks had no say in politics because they couldn’t register to vote, received a poor education, and had no government party in their favor. This is the quote that I thought best related to my topic.
"May this Body immolated [sacrificed] and this Blood sacrificed for Mankind nourish us also, that we may give our body and our blood over to suffering and pain, like Christ -- not for Self, but to give harvests of peace and justice to our People." This quote relates to the black panthers because they gave their lives and sacrifided their blood to stand up to the Ku Klutz Klan an anti black terrorist group. This also relates to the black panthers beacsue like Oscar Romero the salvadorians suffered in pain. The black panthers suffered in pain and suffering during the civil rights movement. Therefore they had to stand up and fight against anti- black groups. This is similar to Romero because they both thought for what was right but they took differnt approaches.

ReplyDelete"We suffer with those who have disapeared, those who have had to flee thier homes and those who have been tortured."
- This quote reflects to my topic in many ways. The blacks were not getting treated fairly on the buses and were getting segrigated on the bus. They were getting tortured by the whites by them not getting equal treatment on the buses. Many of them were punished for stepping up for there rights. That is what happend to Oscar Romero because he was helping his people but then he got killed for saying his peace.Lastly, alll the bllacks were tortured at this time by the whites and the black suffered a great amount not only on buses, but in their daily routine.

My topic is the Mississippi Summer Project. Oscar said this to tell people that help is wanted by God. My topic relates because in the summer project people from different colored care groups came down to help the blacks. God wanted this and it was needed because the same group of people were persecuting them. Oscar said this in a time of persecution of the citizens. The same reason for this quote could be used for the persecution that the blacks had been recieving. I think that this quote if it was heard throughout the country, it would have inspired people to desegregate. With even the few that showed up to help giving them rights and more opportunity in their state, God is still proud of their actions because they may have influenced desegregation. This is why the quote relates to the Mississippi Summer Project.
"We suffered with those who have disappeared, those who have had to flee their homes and those who have been tortured".
ReplyDelete- what Tropeano is trying to say is everyone should have equal rights but the blacks were different from whites and they were treated very unfairly. The Montgomery busing boycott was a problem for whites because blacks were going to sit on the bus instead of giving up their seats to whites.

This relates to the Balck Panthers because they thought it was there duty to make the world more just. These men thought it was there job to improve the society and get the balcks some rights. Even though the Balck Oanthers used violence to get what they wanted, they succeded. They wanted all the blacks to have rights. Remero also wnated the people in El Salvador do be able to have rights and not be stopped by the governemnt.
