This website has some great pros and cons of the issue. Easy to read and gives a nice overview of the effects casinos would bring to Mass.

Video is pro casinos and looks at the economics of the issue.

  1. Personally, I believe that Mass. needs more money, and if this is their way of getting it, OK, I'm fine with it.

  2. Also, the lottery brought in $15.3 BILLION back to cities and towns, $3.5 bil of that in the last four years.
That's still not enough, but casinos can cover the difference.

  3. I beilive that the states biggest problems right now is jobs and taxes. To me this is (Casinos) the perfect fit for the state and that they should definitly go for it despite the few cons. The cons that are present to me don't realy show a good counter-argument. Overall the state should totaly follow this idea and go for it.

  5. I understand why some of the candidates don't like the idea of casinos in Massachusetts. They will raise the crime level, attract people and get them addicted to gambling, turn the towns they are in dirty. But if the government of Massachusetts simply puts a police team on the casinos, overseeing all that happens, the problems would easily be fixed. The generation of the police force,in itself, would create jobs as would the casinos themselves. The people needed to train the police officers would also create jobs and all the money from the casinos would be able to help Massachusetts out of thee rough economic times.

  6. I agree with this idea of casinos in Massachusetts because I think that this will get some people back into work and it will allow people to support families. Also, i think that it is a good idea because i don't think that the crime level will increase because they have great security and people will learn not to steal. Also, i agree with what
Jack said about police officers opening up jobs for training other police officers and it will allow more jobs for casinos. I think that tons of people go to casinos and with the economy so bad right now, i think that this could help a lot of people get back into work so they can make money and support themselves and/or their family. This is possibly a good idea but there still is some caution of people gambling too much as well as higher crime rates occurring.

  7. Ok, time to kill the "casinos are good" party.
Nevada--loaded with casinos, highest unemployment in the country.
    Atlantic City--11 casinos--another horrible economy...
    So. CASINOS ARE BAD

  8. Casinos are job killers because they pull money out of the productive economy. . Each slot machine pulls enough money out of our economy to kill one job. The job claims for Governor Patrick’s casino scheme are fundamentally misleading because they are not taking job losses into account. Casinos mostly concentrate jobs in the three casino host communities. This will result in pink slips being handed out elsewhere. And taxpayers will be stuck with paying for a host of social problems caused by gambling addiction, as well as the huge government bureaucracy required to oversee gambling operations.

Nevada - which is loaded with casinos - currently has the highest unemployment rate in the nation. They are suffering a jobless rate of 14% while Massachusetts is around 9%. Nevada also leads the nation in foreclosures and bankruptcies. And Atlantic City, with 11 casinos concentrated within the city, has a jobless rate higher than Boston. Do we really want to emulate these economies? Let’s think twice before going down that road.

Casino gambling may be attractive to Beacon Hill politicians who will enjoy campaign donations from casino lobbyists, patronage jobs in the gaming bureaucracy, and control over a cash-rich business. But casinos will just make life harder for the people of the Commonwealth.

What’s the alternative? Rather than 12,000 low-wage, dead-in casino jobs we could be creating 50,000 secure green jobs - jobs that we can create in every community in Massachusetts - not just in three casino communities. We can have jobs that make our environment cleaner and make our people healthier - jobs which won’t disappear if oil prices spike. We call that the secure green future, and we need to start generating those jobs now.

  10. I support this idea of casinos because I think it will help u sget out of these rough economic times. A reason for this is it will raise money and create jobs. This will help people support there families. People have sayed that it will raise the crime rate I disagree. In order to prevent this we will need to hire nad train police officers. Ultimately this is a good idea because it creates jobs and helps the economy. Their still are cons though for example people gambling to much and an increased crime but I think that the benefits outweigh the costs.
